Ben & Jerry’s is working with many of its partner cow farms on what it calls the “Mootopia Project”. Project Mootopia outlines the company’s intentions to reduce the carbon footprint of its ice cream by targeting the farms it works with. This will be achieved by taking steps to reduce cow burps and other cow-related emissions that contribute largely to agricultural carbon emissions.
Ben & Jerry’s and its partners will reduce each cow’s emissions by feeding them alternative foods, such as algae and other digestive aids. In addition, farms will experiment with methane digestion technology that transforms cow emissions into fertilizer and electricity that can be reused into usable resources.
