The African National Congress (ANC) paid tribute to veteran Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, who was killed by Israeli military forces.
The ruling party claimed that Israeli forces robbed the world and the Palestinian people of another voice.
51-year-old Abu Akleh was shot dead Wednesday while following an Israeli army raid into the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank.
Another Al Jazeera reporter, producer Ali al-Samud, was injured.
Demands are mounting for an independent investigation into Abu Akleh’s killing.
The ANC condemned his killing and expressed its condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the slain journalist and the Palestinian people.
“A renowned journalist who accurately reported on the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory and the continually inflicted daily atrocities by apartheid Israelis on Palestinians, including vulnerable women and children.”
“As a liberation movement and peace-loving party, the ANC continues to pledge its solidarity with the Palestinian people and on this occasion registers once again an appeal for an end to these brutal killings and the suppression of press freedom” , the party said.
The ANC called for the implementation of the United Nations Resolutions in relation to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict which has caused so many victims, including those of innocent children and women.
“The ANC supports the UN call for an independent investigation into Shireen Abu Akleh’s death and that those responsible be held accountable for her brutal killing and the silence of Press Freedom. “
The ANC is determined that Abu Akleh’s death will not be in vain and that his legacy will survive and join the progressive forces of the world to accelerate their efforts in support of the Palestinian people.
Bent all over the world, Akleh, will be buried on Friday.
